Why DBT?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a cognitive-behavior treatment developed by Marsha Linehan, PhD from the University of Washington. DBT helps you to change your mind in order to change your behaviors. DBT has been proven to help reduce the following:

            • Interpersonal chaos
            • Emptiness
            • Fears of abandonment
            • Suicidal ideation
            • Intense mood swings
            • Excessive anger
            • Low distress tolerance
            • Identity confusion
            • Addictions
            • Eating disorders
            • Anxiety
            • Self-harm

What is dialectics?  It is an effective way to deal with conflict because it takes into account that your needs are both emotional and reasonable.  It teaches us how to make a compromise between these needs .... called WISE MIND.   You will learn skillful ways to gently validate yourself while you replace problem behaviors with dynamic skills that work!

The skills taught in DBT fall under the following broad categories:

            • Core Mindfulness
            • Interpersonal effectiveness
            • Distress tolerance
            • Emotional regulation
            • Self-management

They adhere to the original DBT model and are taught in individual sessions or in a group.  Training is also available to teach providers how to offer these valuable tools.   Internships are available for experiential group training.
